Are Veneers Right For You?

Spring is here, your tax refund has come in, you’ve been thinking about that beautiful smile that you’ve always dreamed of and you’re ready to make it happen.

Whether you want to cover discoloration from years of wearing braces, chips, gaps or other irregularities due to trauma or just wear and tear, you’re considering veneers. But what exactly is a veneer and is it for you?

A veneer is a thin, tooth-colored shell custom crafted of either porcelain or a resin composite. The shell is bonded to the front of the tooth to enhance color, shape, size, or length and typically requires three trips to the dentist – one for a consultation and two to make and apply the veneers. One tooth or many teeth can simultaneously undergo the veneering process.

Veneers are a more conservative option than a crown as they offer a stronger, more aesthetic alternative without requiring extensive shaping before bonding. They are also stain resistant, provide a more natural tooth appearance and can make teeth appear whiter – and who doesn’t’ want a whiter, brighter smile? Veneers generally last 7 to 15 years before needing to be replaced and require no special care other than regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash so they can actually be more cost effective that some other options.

As with any procedure, you and your dentist will want to discuss which options are best for your individual needs. Contact our orthodontic specialists today to schedule a consultation.
